Palladium ist ein Edelmetall und gehört zur Gattung der Platinmetalle. Die jährliche Fördermenge ist mit knapp 250 Tonnen ebenso niedrig wie die von Platin. Zu den größten Palladiumproduzenten zählen Sudafrika, Russland und Kanada. Das Edelmetall wird hauptsächlich von der Automobilindustrie zur Herstellung von Katalysatoren nachgefragt. In der Schmuckindustrie und Feinelektronik kommt Palladium ebenfalls zum Einsatz. Wie alle Edelmetalle wird auch Palladium nahezu rund um die Uhr an den Börsen gehandelt. Die wichtigsten Börsen für Palladium sind die New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) und London Platin & Palladium Market (LPPM).
